Captain Sams:
While we weren't as busy as yesterday, we still had a productive day of banding with 27 new birds and 3 recaptures. The net lanes are continuing to hold quite a bit of water, but we had a nice breeze early on that helped with the high humidity. After opening up the nets and getting the station set up, we all headed down to the river for a shorebird count and watched the morning storm roll in from the ocean. Our first net run yielded our second Veery of the season and our first Canada Warbler! Canada Warbler's are not often banded here so this was a nice surprise and actually my first time ever seeing one. This bird was a hatching year male, so we could start to see the "necklace" that adult males have. We also had several Red-eyed Vireos of different ages which was really great to compare the eye color and different molt limits between hatching year birds and second year birds.

Little Bear:
Today was a slow day for Little Bear. With only 17 birds captured but we managed to get our first of the season Green Heron! This heron has been hanging around our nets since our water has gotten higher over the past few days. I joked around and stated that it would only be 2 days till we catch one of them in our nets. During one of our runs a green heron was hanging near one of the nets and missed the net by a foot! I was thinking tomorrow would be our day since it kept getting closer each day. After we did another run this heron was on the wrong side of the net and managed to get captured. Luckily it was well behaved and was nice to get a photo of it. This was a first to see in the hand for Aiden, so I was super excited to show him this bird. As you can see below how well this young bird was for us.
Another cool find today was this bagworm. It was hanging near one of our nets and I could not help myself from taking a photo of it.
