Captain Sams:
We had another busy day today with 68 new birds and 4 recaptures. Some highlights included a male Prothonotary Warbler, a male Black-throated Blue Warbler, and our first of season Summer Tanagers! These Summer Tanagers were caught together in the same net and were both hatching year birds. This species is difficult to sex during this time of year, so we had to list them as unknown, but we did have some potential indicators that one was a male and the other was a female. The individual we suspect to be a male had a wing length 8mm longer than the other bird and had two orange upper tail coverts. The other bird that is most likely a female had the shorter wing and didn't have an orange in the upper tail coverts.

Little Bear:
Today was definitely a tad bit slower than yesterday. We ended with a total of 50 birds and only 5 of them being recaptures. Our highlight of the day was during one of our net runs where we had 3 Baltimore Orioles in a net! We all got to band one, which was exciting for all of us! After a few net runs in, we manage to catch another 3 more in a different net! With a total of 6 Baltimore Orioles in one day! We captured one a few weeks back so that brings our total for LB up to 7 Orioles! I was pretty happy to see how unique their colors vary from each individuals. Here is our first group of Orioles. Our second batch of orioles were a little to feisty to get a group photo.
During our last net run we also had another treat too! An alligator decided to come pay us a visit. We safely got him moving on so that we can close our nets down. He was persistent but eventually gave way and headed back into the tidal pool nearby. Hopefully tomorrows rain holds off and good things will still be coming our way.
