Sharpie For All

 Captain Sams:

With Tropical Storm Nicole past us we're still catching lots of winds and cooler temperatures. Today the winds were pretty wild ripping by some of the nets but as the day went on we closed some as necessary. Sometimes this lovely fall weather is all you need to enjoy the day at the station, our numbers weren't exactly high but we had decent diversity! Even some fun flyover birds like American White Pelican and American Pipit! Our most exciting catch of the day was our fourth Sharp-shinned Hawk of the season! Our friend Adam from the Kiawah Conservancy also got to come join us for the day and experience raptor banding.

Wind, caught in the breeze,

Shifting trees croak like small frogs,

listen closely friends

Little Bear:

It was just as gusty over at Little Bear today so we had to close some nets as the day went on as well. Despite our best efforts and keeping as many nets open as possible, bird activity was just too low to catch much. We did at least catch the site's 2nd Blue-headed Vireo, which was pretty exciting because I had missed the previous ones banded at Little Bear and Captain Sam's and was really hoping to see one in the hand before the season was over. Today was also my last day at Little Bear for the season. It seems so bizarre that we are this close to the end, but it was nice to go sit at East Beach for the sunrise one more time. Aidan and I even saw a coyote walking along the beach! We've heard them in the morning before and have seen their tracks in the sand, but this was the first time we actually saw one here.

Beautiful Blue-headed Vireo
