The First of Us

 CAPTAIN SAMS

Today was the first day for the banding assistants out at Kiawah! We caught 4 new birds and 13 recaptures today for a total of 17 birds. Of these birds there were 8 different species including the first of season downy woodpecker and hooded warbler. The hooded warbler was a nice hatch-year male and was a fun addition to a rather warbler-less day. In addition to the hooded warbler we also caught a new black-throated blue warbler. Unlike the individual captured a few days ago this one was not part of the Appalachian subspecies. It is always nice to see some earlier migrants in the beginning of the season!

Unfortunately the mosquitos are still quite prevalent out at the station, but the winds were slightly higher today and gave us a bit of a reprieve at times. We are excited to see what birds we catch as the season progresses!
