We'll Get You One Day GREG

 CAPTAIN SAMS

Today was another slow day at Captain Sams, but that did not stop us from getting things done around the site. On top of our captures for the day, which included 21 recaptures and 14 new birds, we managed to repair some nets in preparation for another wave of migrants that will inevitably be on their way. Although it was slow and we didn't catch any particularly exciting species, one individual bird stood out amongst the group. We recaptured a northern waterthrush that seemed to have an older band. After looking into its origin, we found out that this waterthrush was banded at Little Bear on September 15th of 2022! It's always exciting when we are able to recapture birds like his, who seem to be making their way south on the same course it had previous years. Although not quite as exciting as the worm-eating warbler recaptured yesterday this was still a remarkable recapture.

LITTLE BEAR

Today was a lot slower but we manage to capture a total of 24 birds. The sun kept away for most of the day allowing us to enjoy the cooler winds that we had this morning. Our highlight species we captured today was yet another palm warbler (western subspecies). After our first few net runs our capturing rate decreased a lot. The excitement of the day was an almost captured great egret that was partially caught in the net. Unfortunately I did not get to it in time and it escaped. Maybe tomorrow it might come back.

I am excited to the next cold front to come in and see some more migrants to show up.

-Kristin
