CAPTAIN SAMS
It was a bit slower today out on the spit, with only 41 total birds (19 new and 22 recaptures). Unsurprisingly we caught lots of recaptures, which has been the theme for the last week. Gray Catbirds made up the majority of our catch, which (as a catbird fan) makes me quite happy! We also caught a few different warbler species that are still hanging around, including some Black-Throated Blue Warblers, a Palm Warbler (western subspecies), and a Northern Parula.
Today was the first day in awhile that Captain Sams didn't catch a single Common Yellowthroat! This just goes to show how much our species make-up is changing as we get further into October. As the Common Yellowthroats have dwindled away they've been replaced by the catbirds who will in turn be replaced by the Yellow-rumped Warblers in a few weeks. It is always interesting to see how different species move through the station throughout the season!
As we continue deeper into October I am excited to see what other birds we catch, hopefully we get some fun new sparrows soon!

LITTLE BEAR
Today was almost an even capture of new birds and recaptures. We ended with a total of 48 birds, of those, 21 were newly banded and 27 were recaptures. It is crazy to see a decent amount of recaptures and I am excited to see some of them leave. We have been catching a decent amount of Gray Catbirds but it is starting to slow down the last few days.
I am starting to hear more sparrows out at the station and hoping to catch a few of them in the next few days. On a more excited news, our Painted Bunting numbers are still increasing greatly! We captured 6 new birds today added our season total up to 265! I think its crazy to see such a large amount, but Little Bear had a great growing season of fox tails that bring in those crazy little buntings. I am hoping we can hit 300 by the time the season is over but only time will tell.
