Bird activity continues to be slow with only 10 new birds and 6 recaptures of 8 different species banded today. The highlight of the morning was a Least Flycatcher. This is the first of the season at Captain Sam's - Little Bear had their first a couple days ago.
We also recaptured an old male Painted Bunting which was originally banded as a second-year on 8/15/12. That year we participated in the Painted Bunting Observer Team (PBOT) project and were color banding Painted Buntings as well as putting on the normal metal band. This particular male got a lime green band over a red/white stripe band on the left leg and a metal band over a yellow band on the right leg. Over time, plastic color bands degrade and can break, and fall off which is what happened to this guy. When we captured him today, he only had the metal band and the red/white stripe band left. Thankfully, the metal bands last forever because we may not have been able to figure out his identity without it.

LITTLE BEAR
It was slow at Little Bear today too, with 15 new birds and 3 recaptures of 10 different species.
The south winds seem to have prevented much bird movement for the past few days. Most of the birds we captured today were either resident or species of migrants that have been passing through for a couple of weeks now--the one exception being another Palm Warbler.
