CAPTAIN SAM'S
After seeing a good amount of bird activity on the radar last night and hearing several nocturnal flight calls while opening the nets, I had higher hopes for today. But that quickly diminished after the 1st net round when only 9 birds were brought back to the table. We ended the day with 25 new birds and 6 recaptures of 14 different species. Despite not having that many birds around the station, we did have some very exciting ones. We banded our first Palm Warbler and Blue Grosbeak of the season and our second Bell's Vireo of the season. It's pretty hard to beat a Bell's Vireo at an east coast banding station but KIB's first ever Mourning Warbler did just that! Today's theme was quality over quantity.
LITTLE BEAR
Today started off with distant rolls of thunder and stayed mostly cloud for a good part of the morning. When we arrived at the station this morning there was an Eastern Screech Owl sitting in a near by tree. We also saw some Baltimore Orioles fly by as we were getting things ready for the day. The radar had looked good leading us to believe that today would pick up a bit in terms of numbers of birds. It did not. We banded 28 new birds, had 7 recaptures totaling 15 different species. Though it may not seem like a lot, our numbers today were higher than the past few days. Our highlight of the day was a Cape May Warbler, a first for either site this season.

Bell's Vireo (hatch-year, sex unknown) Today's individual is much paler in comparison to the one we banded on September 5, 2016. |
