Today was a little busier with some more migrants coming through. We had 18 new birds banded of 8 different species, and 8 recaptures of 2 species. We recaptured some young Northern Cardinals that had noticeable fault bars in their tail. A fault bar is caused when the nutritional demand for feather growth is not met. It's easy to use fault bars to age hatch year birds because their tail feathers grow in all at once, so the fault bar will be even across the tail.

Little Bear
Today was a little slower than yesterday with a total of 8 birds (7 new, 1 recap) of three species. We had a great time banding with the help of long-term volunteer Ryan Donnelly, even though we had to close nets early due to heat. Meredith and I also got to practice driving the ATV on our way back, which was probably more enjoyable for us than it was for those riding in the back. Today was my last day at Little Bear for a little while, as we'll be switching up the crews for another week starting tomorrow.
