FOS: Chipping Sparrow

CAPTAIN SAM'S

Although today continued to be slow, we caught some interesting individuals at Captain Sam's.  We continue to catch some late season warblers including a Black-throated Blue and Yellow Warbler. We also caught a Myrtle Warbler captured in 2014, making this bird at least 4 years old. Another recapture was a Catbird banded on October 13th of this season. This bird had little fat when captured and weighed 36 grams. This bird has since put on over 12 grams in 3 weeks and now has a fat score of 5 (the highest fat score on our rating system).  This is a rather incredible feat. Imagine putting on a third of your body weight in 3 weeks in order to migrate further south. We can use this data to infer that Captain Sam's is an important stopover area for this bird and likely other species to refuel for migration.

LITTLE BEAR

It was another slow morning out at Little Bear with 25 new birds and 15 recaptures of 14 different species. We had a few late migrants, which included 2 Cape May Warblers and surprisingly another 4 Yellow-billed Cuckoos. It has been a pretty good year for cuckoos with 31 being caught so far at Little Bear alone compared to last fall when we only had 7. We also caught a first ever Chipping Sparrow for the Little Bear site, and it is only the 7th Chipping Sparrow caught at KIBS.
