Today was a great day! We had a total of 41 newly banded birds and 15 recaptures. We got our first Savannah Sparrow! Most sparrows are hard to tell apart and can take time to learn them! Here is a link that can describe a few sparrows that are similar and some easy characteristics to distinguish them apart.

Little Bear:
The radar looked decent for bird movement last night, but the wind kept those birds from landing. We had a slow morning at Little Bear shutting down early due to wind. In the few hours we were open, we banded 9 new birds and recaptured 14 birds of 10 species. No new species, but we are continuing to catch some late migrants, including Red-eyed Vireo, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and more Painted Buntings! We're all wondering where those Yellow-rumped Warblers are, as this time last year Little Bear was already catching high numbers of them daily. Hopefully we see that big push migrating down before we end the season.
