Captain Sam's:
Today was a another slower day with little migration the night before. In fact, we ended up netting more recaptures (mostly Grey Catbirds) than new birds (also mostly Grey Catbirds).
The main highlight of today was our attempt to catch White Ibis. A flock of Ibis had been hanging out all morning in the salt marsh immediately adjacent to the banding table. In hopes of catching one, Aaron set up a net out in the marsh and we attempted to herd them in by walking slowly towards them in a semicircle. The birds seems almost entirely unperturbed by our presence and simply moved slowly in the direction that we were slowly pushing them. Unfortunately, just a bit before we were set to charge forward and flush them into the waiting net, the Ibis caught on and all flushed as a group. A single Ibis hit the net which turned out to be too brittle anyway as it busted right through, leaving nothing but a football-sized and Ibis-shaped hole.

Little Bear:
Today, on the east side of the island, we witnessed a fiery sunrise, complete with a flock of boat-tailed grackles adorning a driftwood tree.
It has been rather slow the last couple of days, and we have been preparing for the upcoming cold front this weekend by repairing nets and washing bird bags. Notably, we also had a flock of White Ibis on our site today, and we set up a net in the perfect spot to catch them tomorrow. We are ready to go and will make sure to update all of our wonderful blog readers on how our next big migration wave goes. Stay tuned!
