BIG DAY!

Captain Sam's

Today was a great day! With the temperatures at a low this morning we had a very busy morning. We were banding birds non-stop today! We had a total of 406 newly banded birds and 15 recaptures. Some of our first of the season birds, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, House Finch, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Blue-headed Vireo, and Least Flycatcher were absolutely gorgeous. My favorite bird today was the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. This is my favorite bird that I got to see up close.  Another cool bird to see up close was the Blue-headed Vireo! Check them out below!

Little Bear

We had an amazing day out at Little Bear with 400 new birds and 4 recaptures of 28 different species. Tropical Storm Michael finally leaving the east coast and the cold front Friday morning allowed birds in the Atlantic Flyway to finally move and enabled us to get our biggest day ever at the Little Bear site! First of the season species today for Little Bear were Black-throated Green Warbler, Swamp Sparrow, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Gray-cheeked Thrush, Myrtle Warbler and Yellow Palm Warbler. Yellow Palms represent the Eastern race of Palm Warblers and are less common in our nets than the duller Western Palms. As usual for this time of year, catbirds and yellowthroats dominated the capture total with 149 and 83 banded of each species. We are hopeful tomorrow will be busy as well and look forward to whatever surprises we might find in Little Bear's nets.

Our record-breaking morning wouldn't have been possible without the help of our amazing volunteers, we appreciate all their help today and for coming out throughout the season to help us as well!

- Michael
