It was pouring rain when I woke up this morning and according to the radar, the rain was supposed to clear out by the time we needed to open up the nets. Kristin and I parked the truck on the beach at 6:00am and I looked at the radar one more time before walking into the banding site. A new storm had formed down the coast and looked as like it was heading right us the coast to us. I decided to wait out the storm in the truck as it didn't look like it was that large. Well, three hours later we were finally able to open the nets. The storm just blew up and was quite severe, and dumped another 0.75 inches of rain on us.
Despite the delayed start, we actually did better today than yesterday with 18 new birds and 7 recaptures of 10 species. We banded our first Common Yellowthroat and House Finch of the season. Common Yellowthroats are the most common species that we capture at KIBS and we average over 1000 of them each fall. Since 2009, we have banded 13,412 Common Yellowthroats.
